What you can expect at the first meeting…
If your insurance company has told you that they will not pay your disability benefits for whatever reason and you and your doctors agree that you are not able to return to work, we encourage you to contact us. As far as lawyers go, we are an approachable trio and we are happy to help.
When you first call us, our experienced law clerk, Emily Rimes, will spend time with you answering your questions and gathering information about you and your case. She will also set up a time for you to speak directly with one of our lawyers as soon as possible. We know you may feel anxious about reaching out to a lawyer and we do not want you to wait long to hear back from us. We appreciate that you are without an income and financially things can become dire quickly. There is no time to waste.
When we do speak, we will want to know some important information. We will ask you to send us letters from the insurance company and some of your doctors’ records if you have them available. It’s okay if you don’t know all the answers or if you don’t have all your documents. We can work with what you do have for our first meeting.
While we would like to meet you in person, we understand that depending on where you live or how you are feeling, that might not be possible. If you are not able to make it to our Toronto or Markham offices, we are able to book a meeting room at a location closer to you. We regularly serve clients located all across Ontario. We often use remote meeting technology or speak on the telephone to accommodate clients who are located long distances from our offices.
Once we have had a chance to meet with you, we will tell you whether or not you have a good case and whether we can be of assistance. We do not take every case. If for whatever reason we cannot help you, we will try to point you in the direction of someone who can.
When we take you on as a client, we will take over dealing with the insurance company, allowing you to focus on your health. We will work with your medical team to gather all the evidence we need for your case. We will fight to get you the benefits you are entitled to and desperately need.
We understand that you are not receiving an income which is why we usually work “on a contingency basis”. That means that you do not need to pay us anything until your case resolves.
Once retained, we will communicate all significant steps that take place in your case with you. We do, however, understand the stressors you may have faced communicating with insurance companies and dealing with your claim and we therefore try not to bother you with the day to day dealings on your case. We will call you with updates and we encourage you to call us anytime with questions or concerns. We truly believe that the better the communication between us and our clients, the better the result.
